“I will be in touch with you” is a way of saying indicating that we stay in communication.
Human nature moves between the urge to connect and the necessity to separate from others.0
– Blaise Pascal
As the French mathematician and philosopher, Blaise Pascal expresses already in the 17th century the idiosyncrasy of human behavior.
Being in touch means deeply connecting to your senses. Being in touch is being connected. The connection is one of the deeper miracles of this universe.
All particles on a subatomic level are in interrelation to each other in this universe. That means that we temporarily host atoms from other people, mountains, dogs, and plants in our own body until we expel them to take in different ones.
We are all connected with each other
On that level we can never be separate and yet the human mind Constantly seeks to create degrees of separation between “them and the others”. On the other hand, humans thrive on connection.
The human mind constantly creates associations in order to explain phenomena of all kinds and create relationships between objects, people, themselves and the world. Society as such is based on these associations. Connection starts with the senses; truly seeing, touching smelling means truly connecting.
My father, for example, is the master of ‘sensing things’. He can smell a certain scent from a far distance until he finally locates it in some unexpected spot. He is truly guided by his nose and other senses. He will sense tracks in the forest and animals before he even can see them.
He taught me to truly observe closely nature and people around me.
It’s about feeling each other
A good health practitioner, for example, senses the nature of the mind and body of another human being. It is from a deep conscious practice of yoga or similar disciplines that we can refine the use of the five senses. And one can almost take it to the level of extrasensory awareness.
When we see into the eyes of another, we again must understand the whole picture. This is not merely a brain effort our senses are highly involved here as we tune into the individual that stands in front of us. In this way, we truly see another.
And when we listen to another withal our senses, we feel them more than that we just see them. We listen carefully to their words, to their heart, and hear the essence of what they are saying with their speech. In this way, we truly hear them.
Being in touch with Yoga
In the system of Yoga, the awakening and mastering of the senses (Pratyahara) is a big step to self-mastery.
I sense spaces, have always been consciousness of the feelings in places and spaces. There is a clear right and not right. The positioning in space is essential as we study in Asana (posture) practice.
As we develop our sense awareness as individuals it opens to us the space to make decisions from the place of acute awareness and presence. When two people in communication uphold the same level of consciousness they tend to connect also on a sensory level.
Traditional Yoga teaches to develop the senses and also to isolate them and to control them on a higher level. It is another form of practicing mindfulness and concentration. All of these are gateways to the state of meditation. A still mind and alert senses give us a heightened sense of being a life. In this way, we can also truly touch another.
